What are Silver Candelabra?

The word Candelabra is a derivation of the Latin word "candelabrum" which means candlestick. Candelabras are a term that refers to a pair or more of decorative candlesticks or candleholders shaped as a column or pedestal and having several arms for holding candles. Candelabrum is the singular form and usually refers to one candlestick.

The idea behind candelabras is to have a central supporting column fitted with a socket that holds two, three, four, and occasionally more, branches. If so desired, the branches can be removed, and the column used as a candlestick.

Because candles were the main source of light until the invention of the gas light they eventually became more ornate and of course eventually became made of precious metals like gold and silver.

How to buy Silver Candelabra

1. Check for the hallmark and make sure that the silver candelabra are in one piece and do not have a sterling silver base and silver plate stick for example.

2. Silver plate can also be hallmarked so it is important to check the hallmark guide and make sure that you know exactly what you are buying.

3. If you breathe over the silver candelabra, you should be able to see if there have been any joins or irregular patterns in the metal. This could indicate that hallmark or other parts have been added on later.

4. If you are buying silver candelabras they will most likely be sterling silver. Pure silver is too soft to work with and will damage easily. Sterling silver contains a base alloy to give the metal its strength.

5. Pure silver, like pure gold does not tarnish but sterling silver tarnishes on contact with air and is a natural process. If the candlesticks are old and have been kept on display, the more tarnished they will be.

6. You can clean silver if you are careful but it is important not to use anything abrasive that may damage it. Many people like the age patina found on antique silver.
